thomas james

art curator — USA

Cultural worker, Thomas explores curatorial practice and collage. He layers and juxtaposes, creating dialogues between images, pages, and objects to bring forth personal or collective narratives, accumulating stories that speak to one another. For this residency, Thomas worked on what he calls the Archives of Maison Saint-Joseph, a display that maps his engagement with the house and its objects. Inspired by Aby Warburg’s Bilderatlas and W.E.B. Du Bois’ Data Portraits, this work presents an amalgamated story from his perspective. His investigation interweaves texts on modern art, objects evoking ancient technologies and rituals, and personal items from the site, a family painting of an imagined landscape, jewelry, a woven sculpture brought back from a journey. An arrangement that questions how we inhabit private and shared spaces, how objects subtly guide our movements, and the hidden histories they carry.
