simon rouby
film-maker — FRANCE
Simon Rouby began his artistic career on the streets, spray paint can in hand, before exploring other forms of creation – sculpture, painting, then cinema. Trained in filmmaking at Gobelins in Paris, then at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles, he forged a visual language at the crossroads of visual arts and animated film. His graduation short films travelled to numerous international festivals – Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, San Diego, Bucharest, Ottawa, Taiwan – establishing his unique signature style early on. In 2015, he directed Adama, his first feature film, which was critically acclaimed and nominated for a César Award and a European Film Award as one of the three best animated films of the year. Winner of the Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis in 2016-2017, he developed a video installation practice there, combining image, matter and the memory of gesture.
